What you need On Each Page
The Elements and Principles of Art - Art IA
- IB
The Elements and Principles of Art can be thought of like a
recipe. If you were making a cake, you would need certain
ingredients to make the cake so it taste good. In art, you need
certain elements to make a well thought out piece of art.
Knowing the Elements and Principles of Art allows
you to develop the "Language Of Art". It also allows you
to make intelligent decisions about how your artwork will look in it's
final stage. This Journal should be considered a personal
reference tool for your art.
All of the Elements AND Principles of art are related and are
learned in progression.
Be patient with yourself, and practice, practice,
practice.
EVERY STUDENT THAT COMPLETES
THEIR BOOKS (PAGES COMPLETED AND IN A SCRAPBOOK), AND TURNS EVERYTHING IN ON
TIME, WILL BE ABLE TO USE THEIR JOURNALS AS AN OPEN BOOK FOR THE EXAMS AND
TESTS. STUDENTS THAT DO NOT COMPLETE EVERY PAGE, WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE
THEIR JOURNALS. THIS IS TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO DO YOUR WORK, AND MOST
IMPORTANTLY TURN YOUR WORK IN ON TIME. STUDENTS THAT MERELY CUT AND PASTE
MY HANDOUTS INTO THEIR JOURNALS WILL NOT BE ABLE TO USE THEIR JOURNALS FOR THE
EXAMS AND TESTS.
On each of your pages, both Elements
AND Principles, you MUST have the following:
| Things you Know- What did you know BEFORE we
started each unit? |
Things you Learned -
Most of this information
may be found on your handouts for each Element and Principle |
| Applications for YOUR Artwork. How can
each of the elements and principles possibly be used in a piece of
art? For Example: IDEA! Draw an image of a dog
using only contour lines.
AND......what career
uses this element or principle? Does an architect
need to use lines in their work? If so, state how!
Is a sculptor concerned with balance? If
so, state how!
Don’t just say things like “Architects use
shapes in their work”. We
know that. Say something like:
“Shapes are important to Architects
in their work, because shapes can make people feel a
certain way. (circles/calm, boxes/strong and bold). If they
used the wrong shapes, this could affect the atmosphere of the
building.” |
Each Title on Each Page should be clear so we
KNOW what the page is about. Don't
let it melt into the page, and disappear! |
| Examples of The Element or Principle
Studied. Collect images from the internet, magazines,
catalogs, etc which best represent the Element or Principle.
Extra points may be given for making your own examples, however,
they MUST actually SHOW the proper use of the element or
principle. Simply trying, does not make it correct, no matter
how long you worked on it.
MAKE SURE THESE ARE
LABELED!
|
Each Title
font should show the element that it is
reflecting. For Instance, The word LINE should be made with a
font that is made up of lines. Fonts may be downloaded from dafont.com |
| Example(s) of FAMOUS Artists that use the element
or principle in their work. Make sure you put the name
of the artist, the name of the piece of work, and the year the
artist created. |
A FAMOUS quote regarding the element or
principle. For example: A line is a dot going for a
walk. Paul Klee

| EVERYTHING MUST BE LABELED! For
example: When showing the primary colors, you MUST label them
as the group PRIMARY COLORS - RED - YELLOW - BLUE |
Any Information that
was given to you in class with a handout, shown in artwork
displayed in class, that you found on your own in a book or on
the internet, OR stated in a lecture!
It is important for you to take notes when an
element or principle is introduced in order to collect
information.
|
| Your
pages will be graded on having ALL the above information plus
the following: |
| Originality:
Did you create an
interesting, creative theme to your page? Or did you just
regurgitate the information presented in class! If you are
bored creating these pages, then you are NOT being
CREATIVE! Put your own twist on each page! Do you
have a character that you've drawn all your life? Then
have that character introduce each page in a creative way!
If you use a gazillion (yes, that's s word :) different
colors, then it's going to look unorganized and messy! |
| Neatness
- Have you left enough Visual Rest on your page for it to
be easily read? Or is it so crowded with information, that
everything is lost? Use TWO PAGES IF NECESSARY! |
| Organization
- Have you organized your thoughts in a way that is easy
to understand? Or are your points scattered all over the
page, with no thought as to how the points go together in a
logical way? Did you spell everything correctly? |
| Presentation
- Is your final page in
great condition, worthy of putting your name on it? Or has
it been folded, tattered, torn, full of glue, so thick you could
cut a steak with it? If so, consider redoing your page. |
| Work
Ethic in Class - How have
you been working in class? Are you putting forth your very
best effort? Or have you been spending too much time
talking to friends, going to the restroom, wasting time in
general? Are you rude, obnoxious, and just plain out of
order all the time? Do you argue with the
instructor? Are you lazy? A procrastinator? |
| TURN
EVERYTHING in On Time?
No LATE WORK WILL BE
ACCEPTED! (SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES
ONLY!)
